Silicon (Si) accumulates in the epidermal tissues of roots and buds. The epidemic thickening of the silicate-cellulose layer supports the mechanical stability of plants and can improve their resistance against biotic and / or abiotic stress.
– Symptoms: Magnesium is very mobile inside the plant, so when it is absent, it migrates from the old leaves (where the symptoms appear) to the young ones. Internervial chlorosis is observed, as well as reddish, orange, yellow or purple colorations.
– Magnesium function: this element is essential for the plant since the Mg atom is part of the chlorophyll molecule. It is also related to the metabolism of phosphorus (P) as it intervenes in its absorption and transport.
– Magnesium deficiency in the plant produces a reduction in photosynthetic activity, and as a consequence a decrease in crop yields.
The importance of Mg in the life of vegetables lies in its presence in the center of the chlorophyll molecule (without Mg photosynthesis could not be performed). It also works as an activator of the metabolism of carbohydrates, fats and proteins and also intervenes in the transport of phosphates. Mg is a mobile element within the plant and is absorbed from the soil as the Mg + 2 cation.
